of the challenges of the fiscal cliff and hurricane sandy, economists are predicting 150,000 new jobs. that will remain at 7.7% unemployment. nbc's tracie potts is in washington with more on this. >> reporter: mara, good morning. holiday hiring and shopping could also have some play into all that. we'll know in about an hour and a half what those new job numbers look like. 150, 160,000 new jobs is what we're hearing. but the jobless rate 7.7% expected to stay about the same. there are a number of things we do know that could have some impact here, adp says private job growth was about 215,000 in the last month. weekly unemployment claims up about 10,000. we also now know retail sales were up more than expected about 4.5%. again probably that holiday boom. auto sales were up about 9% and that's something that was predicted after hurricane sandy, a lot of people lost their cars it was predicted that the auto industry might end up benefiting from that. bottom line as we await these numbers it will tell a story how the economy is doing when you look at the big picture, economists are fair

to go in different direction. the unfortunate and very tragic incident in connecticut in sandy hook elementary school of course heightened everybody's awareness of what violence can really be all about. and as we have been not only responding, reacting to this national tragedy that i think president obama has adequately described as broken all of our hearts, and in every funeral that has taken place, for those 20 innocent children and six innocent adults in the school districts, and school administrators, we obviously have shared in that very tragic event, all of us. it has touched everybody across this country. san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something ab

in being able to do so. we are going to renew these efforts in light of the sandy hook sentiment and i know there's just a higher level of sentiment that causes us to focus even more on what we can do locally. in fact, this higher level of sentiment, as you'll hear from the police chief, has even caused one of the highest rates of gun return. certainly we paid some money for that, but he's going to tell you there are some individuals out there, in light of sandy hook, that returned their guns and without even asking for remuneration of those guns. and he'll explain that level of detail. but it was the highest level of gun return this past weekend that we were honored to share with our community partners in making sure that we get these guns off the streets. two pieces of legislation that we are introducing to the board of supervisors with the support of our police chief, our health department, and certainly being led by supervisor cohen whose district has experienced an inordinate amount of violence throughout this year. we talk about it all the time. what can we do? for one, the ammunition

for victims of superstorm sandy-- nearly $10 billion to pay for flood insurance claims. house speaker john boehner has promised a vote on another $51 billion later this month. president obama was reelected today. you might have thought that that happened in november but it was today that the house and the senate held a joint session to count the electoral votes from each state. no surprise: mr. obama won with 332 electoral votes to mitt romney's 206. but the president's margin was narrow when you look at the votes cast by individual americans. the popular vote. when you add their totals together, it comes to nearly 130 million votes cast and mr. obama won by about four points. he's the first president to get more than 51% of the vote twice since dwight eisenhower. this is the last thing you want to see when you're taking a flight: the pilot being hauled away by the police. it happened today in minneapolis aboard an american eagle commuter plane bound for new york. the pilot is accused of drinking too much. michelle miller is at laguardia airport for us tonight. michelle? >> reporter: well,

the weapon used in sandy hook and high-capacity magazines of 10 rounds or more. there's other things that we as major city chiefs would like to see happen, such as the banning of internet ammo sales. we'd like to see in-person transactions. the record of sales and licensing of ammo vendors, and other things i can talk to you about off line. we are doing everything we can to make san francisco a safer place and reduce violent crime. the mayor spoke of ipo, which he introduced at the very beginning of august. and for the first august in memory and maybe even on record, we suffered zero homicides in that month. unfortunately one homicide in the city is too many. we've had 67 this year to date, which is up over the last couple years, record low. still the best we've had in 10 years absent those record lows. gun violence is down 4% in san francisco. largely because of community partnership. things like our gun tip line which i'll give you, 575-4444 and things like the gun buy back program. if you don't think that one of these guns or any of the other 2 96 * guns that were recovered here of the 3

through prolonged power outages have been greatly diminished. when hurricane sandy struck, we saw the results of the work we had done together. while we can never entirely prevent damage or power outages, the response was, in fact, better and faster. once again, we saw a problem and, together, worked to address it.
